Just weeks after WWE capped off its flagship pay-per-view with a “historic” women’s match, the National Football League (NFL) has announced that its annual Super Bowl spectacular feature two teams entirely made up of women.

The move came after fans of the NFL launched a global trend with the hashtag #GiveFootballDivasAChance, imploring the NFL to stop relegating women’s football games to the status of “eye candy” for a three-minute bathroom break.

A statement issued this morning by the NFL reads: “We applaud WWE for making the progressive, inclusive step of showcasing lady wrestlers, and we believe the feisty foxes of football deserve the same respect.”

Next year, Superbowl XLVIIXI (54) will be contested two teams created especially for the occasion: The Carolina Cougars will vie for gridiron supremacy against The Detroit Lionesses.

To ensure complete inclusivity, the top 40 male players in the NFL will be required to perform synchronized gymnastic dance routines while wearing tiny skirts at fieldside.
