After more than two-decades of unwaveringly sticking to the “official story” about the so-called Montreal Screwjob, legendary pro wrestler Bret “Hitman” Hart revealed today that the entire episode was a “work” — a wrestling ruse of his own creation.

“I came up with the whole idea and pitched it to Vince (McMahon),” the wrestler said in a livestream from his Calgary home this morning. “And everybody bought it!”

Everything wrestling fans have believed until now — that Hart was “screwed” out of his championship when McMahon prematurely called for the bell in a match with Shawn Micheals — was “all completely planned in advance,” said Hart.

“Me, Shawn, and Vince had an amazing time coming up with that screwjob storyline,” said the Hitman. “We cooked up the whole thing while drinking margaritas and eating lobster beside Vince’s pool one summer afternoon.”

To add a sense of real-life drama to the storyline, Vince McMahon applied a phony “black eye,” ostensibly from an outraged Hart punching him in the locker room, but really created with a little smudge of shoe polish.

The screwjob was a “win-win-win” for everyone involved, said Hart. “I was so happy for Shawn to get the title, and it was an amazing swerve for me to lose in front of my Canadian countrymen — who would have thought that’d happen!?”

Hart was so amazed and delighted that the elaborate storyline fooled fans, he spelled “WOW” in the air with his finger following the famous match.
