Fans of professional wrestling were surprised Friday when the regularly scheduled two-hour Raw recap was suddenly interrupted by a never-before-seen wrestling match.
After 72 consecutive minutes of video packages rehashing what had happened four days earlier on WWE’s flagship show, Monday Night Raw, a match between Sheamus and Curtis Axel broke out.
“I’ve never seen anything like this!” exclaimed commentator Michael Cole, referring to the traditional lack of original programming on Friday Night Smackdown.
“History is being made here tonight!”
The match lasted for eight minutes and resulted in a disqualification win for Sheamus. After the final bell, wrestling fans were treated to a dramatically edited video package recapping the debut of the Wyatt Family.
World Wrestling Entertainment later issued an apology for the “unorthodox programming,” and promised that next week’s Smackdown will be 100 percent Raw recaps.
