Professional wrestler Sami Zayn is reportedly getting “major heat” backstage at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) amid allegations that he is blatantly plagiarizing the in-ring repertoire of a now-retired masked wrestler.

Zayn issued a statement on Twitter today denying any alleged similarities between himself and El Generico, a Mexican wrestler who earned middling success on the American independent scene between 2002 and 2012.

“These allegations are patently false,” tweeted Zayn. “I’ve never even been seen in the same room as this El Generico person!”

While Zayn’s statement is difficult to refute, as no one can ever recall seeing both men in the same place, there are enough similarities between the men to spark concern, such as:

  • Both men use the sitout scoop slam piledriver, spin sitout powerbomb, exploder suplex into turnbuckles, and suicide dive tornado DDT
  • Zayn seems to be emulating El Generico’s ginger hair and beard, visible through the luchardor’s mask
  • Both wrestlers earn “Ole” chants, though Zayn insists the fans are actually just chanting for Ole Anderson
  • Both men appear to enjoy ska music, making them the only two people left on Earth who admit to enjoying ska music

El Generico was unreachable for comment, having moved to Tijuana in 2012 to run an orphanage, and is rumored to have been killed by a cartel. But a spokesperson for Generico, a mysterious man called Mr. R. Sebai, called the allegations of plagiarism “totally loco.”
