Due to a typo on contractual documents, World Wrestling Entertainment will actually induct David Sammartino, not his more famous father Bruno, as widely reported, into its Hall of Fame this year.

“We apologize for any confusion,” said a press release issued by WWE this morning.

“Because the documents have already been finalized, David Sammartino will join the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2013. We’ll try to get Bruno in there next year.”

The younger Sammartino joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1984 and was managed by his much more famous, more talented and hugely more influential father.

David struggled valiantly to emerge from the shadow of his legendary father, but fared poorly in his initial feud with Brutus Beefcake.

It is widely believed that David was merely hired by WWF as a means of luring his father into some big-money matches. When that didn’t happen, David was fired after allegedly punching a fan.

Although WWE “regrets the error” of accidentally inducting David into the Hall of Fame instead of Bruno, the company did state that “David probably belongs in the Hall of Fame more than Mike Tyson or Bob Uecker.”
