Moviegoers flocked to cinemas in record numbers this week to see the much-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, primarily to finally learn the mythology behind Big Van Vader.

For decades, fans of science fiction and professional wrestling alike have wondered how, exactly, the gargantuan grappler with a jock-strap mask is related to Darth Vader, a high-ranking evil cyborg in the Galactic Empire.

SPOILER ALERT!

They are cousins. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it is revealed that Big Van Vader is the son of Gladys Skywalker, who is the sister of Ralph Skywalker, father of Anakin Skywalker (a.k.a. Darth Vader).

Eagle-eyed viewers of the new film can spot Big Van Vader working in a spaceport on the planet Takodana, where the crew of the Millennium Falcon meet Maz Kanata to help BB-8 reach the Resistance.

Fans will have to wait for the sequel to finally learn the origins of Starrcade ’86: Night of the Skywalkers.
