This Sunday, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) will host a pay-per-view event called No Mercy, where some matches will likely end, rather incongruously, in mercy being granted via tap-out submission.

No Mercy will, in fact, almost certainly feature numerous instances of mercy, such as rope-breaks, five-counts to break illegal, and the absence of JBL on commentary.

WWE has denied allegations of false advertising surrounding the event, but the idiosyncratic nomenclature is a recurring issue with WWE pay-per-views. Other instances include:

  • No Way Out has featured numerous cage matches in which there have indeed been ways out
  • The world did not end at WWE Armageddon
  • Fastlane is typically quite slow-paced
  • Over the Limit ended exactly on time
  • There was more than one One Night Stand
  • Relatively few participants in the original Survivor Series event are still alive
  • Extreme Rules actually has quite lax rules
  • Roughly half the participants in Bragging Rights lost their matches

It is expected that fans will receive “no mercy” on Sunday, as WWE announced today that the event will feature a 15-minute promo by Roman Reigns.
