cancelledWrestling fans worldwide are still reeling from the bombshell announcement that James Ellsworth has been released from his WWE contract, and speculation has already begun as to who will now challenge The Undertaker at WrestleMania.

Ellsworth was “the obvious choice” to face the Phenom at WWE’s biggest annual spectacle, writes veteran wrestling journalist Dan Mutzler.

“The irresistible force meeting the easily moveable object — it would have shattered PPV records,” says Mutzler. “Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they just cancel WrestleMania altogether now.”

Over the past two decades, The Undertaker’s match at WrestleMania has been a highlight of the event — and the speculation that he would face Ellsworth this spring led to an enormous spike in sales of travel packages to New Orleans for the event.

With Ellsworth gone, many fans and pundits believe there are only a few viable opponents for the Undertaker left in WWE, including:

  • Tyler Breeze
  • Jey Uso (but not that loser Jimmy)
  • French-language commentator Ray Rougeau
  • Rezar
  • Carmella

Some people have speculated that the Undertaker is actually retired, but that’s not true. The man who originally portrayed The Undertaker, Mark Calaway, has indeed retired, but the character will live on, portrayed by Baron Corbin.
