Fans of professional wrestling worldwide are commemorating a solemn anniversary today, because on this day 24 years ago, an in-ring contract signing unexpectedly devolved into chaos and violence.

A moment of silence was observed by millions at precisely 7:21 pm EST to mark the moment that a seemingly innocuous legal proceeding — the signing of documents to formalize a sporting contest between Bret Hart and Yokozuna — turned horrifyingly aggressive.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before in my life!” screamed commentator Gorilla Monsoon. “This is an unprecedented display of villainy!”

The world was forever changed when Yokozuna defiled the sacred tradition of in-ring contract signings by failing to behave in a cordial and professional manner, instead flattening Hart with his devastating Bonzai Drop.

The hashtags #NeverForget and #NeverAgain were trending on Twitter as fans shared personal memories of what they were doing the fateful day a contract signing turned violent.

Thankfully, nothing like it has ever happened again and, God willing, never will.
